How to Choose the Perfect Photo for Your 3D Crystal: A Complete Guide

Getting the Best Results from Your 3D Crystal Photo
The quality of your 3D crystal engraving depends heavily on the photo you provide. A great photo becomes a breathtaking crystal. Here's everything you need to know to choose the perfect image for your custom crystal.
What Makes a Great Crystal Photo?
Our laser engraving technology works by converting your 2D photo into thousands of tiny 3D points inside the crystal. Photos with clear subjects, good contrast, and proper lighting produce the most stunning results.
The 4 Key Factors
- Resolution — Higher is always better. Photos taken with modern smartphones (iPhone 8 or newer, Samsung Galaxy S8+) are typically excellent. Minimum recommended: 1 megapixel. Ideal: 3+ megapixels.
- Lighting — Natural, even lighting produces the best engravings. Photos taken outdoors on a slightly overcast day are ideal. Avoid harsh shadows across faces.
- Focus — The main subjects must be sharp and in focus. Slightly out-of-focus backgrounds are fine (and can actually look great in crystal).
- Contrast — Clear distinction between subjects and background helps the laser create a more detailed engraving.
Best Types of Photos for Each Crystal Shape
Heart Shape
- Close-up portraits (head and shoulders)
- Couples photos
- Mother and child
- Pet close-ups
- Best with 1-2 subjects centered in the frame
Rectangle Portrait
- Full-body standing photos
- Wedding portraits
- Graduation photos
- Family group photos (vertical arrangement)
- Works well with 1-5 subjects
Rectangle Landscape
- Wide group photos
- Scenic backgrounds with people
- Sports team photos
- Photos with horizontal composition
- Best for 2-8 subjects side by side
Photos to Avoid
- Blurry or out-of-focus images — The laser can't add detail that isn't there.
- Very dark photos — Underexposed images lose detail in crystal engraving.
- Heavy filters or edits — Instagram filters, extreme contrast adjustments, or heavy HDR can reduce engraving quality.
- Tiny subjects in a large scene — If faces are less than 10% of the image, they won't have enough detail in the crystal.
- Screenshots or heavily compressed images — Social media downloads (especially from Facebook or WhatsApp) are often too compressed.
How to Get the Original Photo (Not the Compressed Version)
- From iPhone: Use AirDrop or email the "Actual Size" version to yourself.
- From Android: Share via Google Photos link (not WhatsApp or text message).
- From a Photographer: Ask for the full-resolution digital files.
- From Social Media: If possible, get the original from whoever took the photo instead of downloading from Facebook/Instagram.
People, Pets, or Both?
Our crystal engraving works beautifully with all types of subjects:
- People — Portraits, couples, family groups, wedding parties
- Pets — Dogs, cats, and other pets. Check our Pet Memorial Collection for specialized pet crystals.
- People + Pets Together — A family photo with the dog? Absolutely!
- Objects — Cars, homes, and other meaningful objects can work too, though faces generally produce the most impressive results.
Our Photo Review Process
After you upload your photo and place your order, our design team reviews every image before engraving begins. If we think a different crop, adjustment, or photo would produce better results, we'll reach out with suggestions before proceeding. You're never locked in — we want you to be thrilled with the final product.
